Mikel Merino, Arsenal’s Spanish international, has finally broken his silence on the anticipated arrival of Andrea Berta as the new sporting director of the club. The potential replacement for Edu has been a topic of speculation, and Merino, who transitioned from Real Sociedad to Arsenal last summer, has now voiced his thoughts on the matter.

Merino’s inaugural season with the Gunners has been a mix of success and surprises. Despite this, he has remarkably held his ground, even when asked to take on the unusual role of a makeshift striker, owing to the club’s severe injury predicament. He is not only embracing this unexpected responsibility but also thriving in it, as reflected in his recent performance.

In an exclusive interview with the Italian newspaper, Gazzetta dello Sport, Merino offered an insight into his new role and the potential appointment of Berta. When queried about Berta’s potential association with Arsenal, Merino candidly admitted, “I don’t know if it’s official; anyway, I don’t know anything.” However, he added with a hint of humor, “But I do know one thing: I’ll ask for a striker’s contract. They earn more, and now I have to cover two roles too!”

The 28-year-old Merino seems to be relishing his time in the English capital. His versatility and positive attitude have made him an invaluable asset to Mikel Arteta’s squad. Although he might not be a permanent starter, his contribution to the team in various roles cannot be disregarded.

Merino’s performance statistics this season are impressive, with six goals in 33 games. This includes his recent shift to the front, where he has showcased his scoring prowess. He was particularly instrumental in the club’s victory against Chelsea, scoring the winning goal. His exceptional performance continued with a brace in the team’s recent triumph over Leicester City. He also proved his mettle in Arsenal’s 7-1 victory against PSV in the Champions League.

The anticipation around Berta’s arrival and the evolution of Merino’s role in the team add an exciting dimension to Arsenal’s journey in the coming days.
